Second Annual Executive Lecture Series at Gwinnett Tech to Focus on Story of Leadership and Hurricane Katrina

According to many business experts, a company or organization’s success or failure can be attributed to its leadership. When students, faculty, staff and the community gather for the second annual Executive Leadership Series at Gwinnett Technical College, they will learn more about organizational leadership in the face of a crisis with featured lecturer Kim Ryan. The featured lecture of the series is scheduled for February 3, 2016 from noon to 1 p.m. in the auditorium of the Busbee Center in Building 700 at Gwinnett Technical College Lawrenceville Campus.

“Organizational leadership is an important topic in today’s business culture,” said Dean of Business and Art & Design Dr. Jermaine Whirl. “Business schools and programs across the country are taking a new look at the concept of leadership and how that translates to the business community.”

Whirl first heard Ryan speak to the Leadership Gwinnett class and was inspired by her story. Ryan, who is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Southern Regional Medical Center, was previously the CEO of Eastside Medical Center in Snellville and the Principal Chief Operating Officer at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans. It was during her time in New Orleans that Ryan’s leadership was tested with a Category 5 hurricane barreling toward the city.

“It’s a story that not many people have heard,” Whirl said. “She will share that experience along with information that we can all take away to become better leaders.”

The series is predominantly aimed at students in marketing, accounting, hotel, restaurant and tourism management, and any discipline in business management. All lectures are free and open to all faculty members, staff, students and the general public. The goal of the series is to educate and connect students to business enterprises.
